Energy Partnership between Canada and Germany

17/03/2021

On March 16, 2021, German Federal Minister of Economics and Technology Peter Altmaier and his Canadian counterpart Seamus O'Regan agreed to establish an energy partnership between Canada and Germany.

The German-Canadian energy partnership is intended to develop solutions to meet the challenges of climate change. Germany and Canada share great common ground on climate and energy policy. For example, both countries have committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

The partnership focuses on the integration of renewable energies, supply security, technological innovations and cooperation, especially on the future topic of hydrogen.

The generation capacities for green hydrogen in Germany are being greatly expanded. In the future, however, a large part of the hydrogen demand will be imported.

Canada aims to become one of the world's three largest producers of hydrogen by 2050 and to export significant quantities.

The energy partnership is also intended to strengthen cooperation between German and Canadian companies.

The energy partnership is managed at state secretary level. They will meet for the first time in May 2021 to develop a concrete work plan for the energy partnership.

UPDATE June 2021

Since June 2021, a specially established "Secretariat of the Energy Partnership with Canada", based at the Canadian German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, has been working from Montreal and Toronto on the implementation of a detailed work plan, which among other things deals with the integration of renewable energies, security of supply, technological innovations and the future topic of hydrogen. The secretariat serves as a hub for intensive cooperation and is also the first point of contact for information, questions and suggestions regarding the energy partnership.
