The German Day at the PDAC 2023 is organized by the Competence Center for Mining & Mineral Resources at the Canadian German Chamber of Industry and Commerce Inc. (AHK) and the German Resource Agency (DERA) and is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

This year’s German Day will focus on recent developments in regulations on critical minerals in Canada and Germany, as well as on bilateral sustainable raw material supply chains and opportunities for collaboration. The program will include a series of short presentations and panel discussions.

The German Day will take place at the Ontario Invest and Trade Center in downtown Toronto on the 35th floor.

Micha Janosch Zauner
CEO, DEM – Deutsche E Metalle AG

Before joining DEM he was head of the Mineral Resources Department at UIT GmbH Dresden (consulting and engineering company of General Atomics). Expert in the Mineral Working Group for Resource Classification of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

Education: PhD in Geophysics (TU Clausthal) and Master in Economic Geology (TU Bergakademie Freiberg) with ongoing close R&D collaborations with renowned mineral research institutions and universities. Experienced multilingual and intercultural mining and exploration consultant for international technology metals projects (focus on REE, U, Sc, Li, Au, Cu, Co, among others) with field visits and work experience in Europe, Australia, Asia, Africa as well as North and Latin America.

Mike Crabtree
President & Chief Executive Officer, SRC

Mike Crabtree has over 35 years of R&D experience spanning a range of industrial sectors, holds a master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering and currently serves on the boards of several Canadian and US companies, as well as the Canadian Heavy Oil Association. Prior to his current role, he served as SRC’s Vice-President of Energy for over five years, was the Chief Commercial Officer at Carbon Engineering Inc. in Calgary, Alberta, the founder and CEO of Oilflow Solutions Inc. and has also held various senior roles with Schlumberger. In addition to technology innovation and leadership, he has proven international experience in converting research and development into fully commercial technology. Mike is recognized for driving business growth for both global leaders and start-ups in the oil and gas, renewable energy and environmental sectors. 

John Dorward
CEO, Vital Metals

Mr Dorward is a finance and resources executive with nearly 20 years’ experience. Most recently, Mr Dorward was the President, CEO and Director of Toronto-headquartered Roxgold Inc, which was acquired by Fortuna Silver Mines Inc in an allscrip deal valued at US$884 million in 2021. Mr Dorward’s earlier roles include Vice President of Business Development at Fronteer Gold, a TSX and AMEX-listed mining company with gold and uranium projects in USA, Canada and Turkey, which was acquired by Newmont for US$2.3 billion. He was also Chief Financial Officer of Mineral Deposits Ltd, an ASX and TSX-listed mining development company with gold and mineral sands projects in Senegal, West Africa, where he led its TSX IPO and associated US$50 million equity raising. Mr Dorward is Chairman of Contact Gold Corp, and a Non-Executive Director of Surge Copper Corp and Taura Gold Inc.

Belinda Labatte
Chief Executive Officer and Director, Lomiko Metals Inc,

Belinda Labatte, CFA, MBA, ICD.D, has more than 15 years of senior management experience in mining and the extractive industry, and 20 years of capital markets experience, including a decade of strategic development, capital markets investment banking experience, stakeholder engagement, and asset acquisition and disposition processes. Her most recent position was Chief Development Officer of Mandalay Resources Corp. 

Anne Chabot
Policy and Government Relations Director, Windigo First Nations Council

Ms. Anne Louise Chabot, an Anishnawbe woman (Algonquin) from Kitigan Zibi Anishnawbeg First Nation, has twenty-five years of experience working with Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments and industry, service delivery agencies and community groups. Ms. Chabot possesses extensive experience in Indigenous engagement, and project management. She currently works as the Director, Policy and Government Relations for a First Nations organization. 

Jocelyn Douhéret
Director, Northern Plan Society

Mr. Jocelyn Douhéret joined the Société du Plan Nord in April 2016 as Director of the Marketing Office. Previously, Mr. Douhéret was active for more than 10 years in the mining sector as general manager of an environmental services company, then as director and vice-president of business development for a company offering services and equipment. From 1998 to 2006, he worked for Quebec companies on industrial development projects in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Canada, particularly in the natural resources, energy and the environment.

Sven-Uwe Schulz
Deputy Head, German Mineral Resources Agency (DERA)

Sven-Uwe Schulz is deputy head of the German Mineral Resources Agency (DERA) in the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), the federal geological survey of Germany. That is a subsidiary organization of the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Change. Sven serves as head of the unit ‘Evaluation of Mineral Resources’ of DERA. He has more than 20 years experience in the fields of mining engineering, consulting, project management and project evaluation. Schulz worked for two engineering consultants and a university before he joined DERA in 2013. He holds a doctoral degree of Technical University of Berlin, Germany (2008) as well as a master’s degree in mining engineering (2001) of the same university.

Stefanie Dreyer

Stefanie is a TV-journalist and a graduate of the International Journalism Center of the Danube University Krems in Austria. She also got a degree in presentation skills and media techniques as well as an MBA in Economics in Germany. She has worked behind and in front of the camera for a number of broadcasting formats over the years. She is also a host and moderator for conferences, trade fairs and panel discussions. At the moment she is part of the prestigious global journalism fellowship program of the MUNK School of Global Affairs & Public Policy from the University of Toronto.
