Purpose

The goal of the energy business trip to Canada is to support German companies in identifying business and collaboration opportunities along the wind energy and hydrogen value chains. The focus is on individually organized B2B meetings with potential customers, project developers, industry partners, and relevant representatives from business and politics. Thematically, the trip focuses on wind energy, green hydrogen, Power-to-X applications, electrolysers, energy storage, grid infrastructure, and solutions for industrial decarbonization.

Participants will visit Edmonton (Alberta) and Montréal (Québec), two major hubs for the development of renewable energy and hydrogen projects in Canada. In addition to the individual business meetings, the program offers a business breakfast with Canadian industry representatives, networking events, and participation in the Canadian Hydrogen Convention, the country’s leading hydrogen trade show. The trip is aimed in particular at German SMEs, technology providers, plant manufacturers, and engineering service providers who wish to expand their network in Canada and tap into new market potential.

Based on current market trends, the following German technologies are in particular demand in Canada:

  • Hydrogen and electrolysis technologies for the production, storage, distribution, and use of green hydrogen.
  • Power-to-X solutions, particularly for the production of e-fuels, green ammonia, and other hydrogen-based energy carriers.
  • Wind energy technologies and components for onshore wind farms, including turbines, generators, control systems, and grid connection technology.
  • Energy storage and grid integration technologies that support the expansion of renewable energy and contribute to grid stability.
  • Technologies for industrial decarbonization, particularly for energy-intensive industries, as well as solutions for the electrification of industrial processes.
  • CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) technologies for CO₂ capture, utilization, and storage, particularly for applications in the energy and raw materials sectors

Market Situation

Canada is pursuing ambitious decarbonization goals and investing heavily in the expansion of renewable energy and the development of a competitive hydrogen economy. Alberta is emerging as a leading hub for hydrogen production and power-to-X applications and supports investments in electrolysis capacity, hydrogen infrastructure, and carbon capture and storage (CCUS). At the same time, the province is driving the expansion of wind and solar energy.

Québec has a nearly zero-emission electricity supply based on hydropower and is pursuing ambitious expansion goals for wind energy and innovative hydrogen applications. With the Energy Act (Bill 69), passed in 2025, the framework for the development of new energy projects was modernized and long-term energy planning was strengthened. As part of the Action 2035, Hydro-Québec plans to expand by approximately 10 GW of additional wind energy capacity by 2035. Extensive infrastructure and investment programs are creating attractive market opportunities for German technology providers. The CETA free trade agreement also facilitates market entry for German companies in Canada.
