Delegation: Smart Grids

This business development program supports German small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the fields of smart grid infrastructure and energy storage technologies to establish long-term business relationships and tangible market opportunities in the Canadian province of Alberta. The delegation is aimed at companies offering solutions for the modernization and digitization of energy systems, smart grids, grid control and monitoring, energy storage, and the integration of renewable energy.

Over the course of a week, participants benefit from a comprehensive market orientation into the Canadian energy ecosystem, particularly in the energy hubs of Edmonton and Calgary. Individually arranged B2B meetings with potential clients, partners, utilities, authorities, and research institutions, as well as a business breakfast and additional networking events, facilitate direct access to key decision-makers in Canada. The program is supplemented by company and project site visits that offer practical insights into current developments in grid modernization, energy system digitization, and the deployment of innovative storage technologies, highlighting concrete opportunities for cooperation. The program is part of the Market Development Program for SMEs by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and is conducted jointly by AHK Canada and energiewaechter GmbH.

Canada is accelerating the transformation of its energy system, pursuing the goal of achieving a net-zero electricity grid by 2050. A central component of this transformation is the modernization of power grids alongside the expansion of smart grid and energy storage technologies to support the integration of renewable energy and advancing electrification. The province of Alberta, in particular, is emerging as one of North America's most dynamic energy markets. Its competitive electricity market and high receptivity to innovative technologies are driving growing demand for flexible, resilient, and digitized grid solutions.

The policy and financial frameworks significantly support this development. At the federal level, the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program (SREPs) provides approximately CA$ 4.5 billion for projects focused on grid modernization, energy storage, and renewable energy integration. This is complemented by provincial funding programs in Alberta that specifically target innovative grid and storage technologies. Furthermore, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) facilitates market entry for German companies and improves access to investments and public procurement tenders.
