April 12: Over the past decade the annual Canadian German Wind and Solar Energy Conferences have become a synonym for knowledge transfer, professional exchange and great networking opportunities for Canadian and German industry professionals. After the Government of Alberta announced the Alberta Climate Leadership Plan in November 2015, the Renewable Electricity Program will be launched by the end of this year, promising very strong opportunities for the development of renewables in Alberta in the coming years. June 25-30: In collaboration with the Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH, CGCIC is organizing a business delegation to Toronto, Canada and Boston, USA in the fields of Lifescience, Pharma and Biotechnology. Subdued outlook for Canada’s wood and paper industries

The situation in the Canadian wood and paper industry has improved slightly in recent years. However, companies continue to suffer from weak demand and low global market prices. Producers of construction timber are also threatened by the continuation of a trade dispute with the USA.Growing pulp capacities on the global market put manufacturers under pressure to make production more efficient in order to remain competitive. Canada’s shopping centres are very popular

Shopping centres continue to play a central role in the Canadian retail market. In the malls, higher sales are generated in relation to the sales area than in the USA. To attract even more customers to shopping centres, operators are continuing the expansion of existing malls and seek to attract additional anchor tenants. There are also a number of new shopping centres being planned, including in Montreal and Edmonton. Read more (in German)

Canada is expanding its high-speed network

At the end of 2016, the Canadian telecoms regulator CRTC mandated that every household should have access to broadband Internet connections with a download speed of at least 50 megabits per second. High-speed internet is often not yet available in rural regions. The Canadian telecommunications corporations want to further expand their fiber optic networks in the coming years. Currently, only one in four households is connected. Read more (in German)

Canada establishes itself as international “Fintech hub”

The financial sector is one of the key industries of the Canadian economy. In the coming years, commercial banks plan to invest heavily in the development of financial technology applications (Fintech). Increasingly more Canadians are using the corresponding applications to conduct their banking transactions. In recent years, Fintech clusters have emerged in Toronto and Vancouver attracting numerous start-ups and investors. Read more (in German)

Canada’s oil industry under pressure after US election

With the new US government, the uncertainty in the Canadian oil and gas industry is growing. Although President Donald Trump advocates the construction of the planned “Keystone XL” pipeline, he wants to renegotiate the conditions for the project, which could push up the costs. The planned import tax on foreign products also creates headaches for oil producers. This would make Canadian petroleum on the US market even more expensive. Read more (in German)

Canada’s automotive industry again posting record sales

In 2016, Canada has again set a record in automotive sales.  A total of 2.6% more vehicles were sold than in the previous year. Pick-up trucks and SUVs were particularly popular, while the demand for passenger cars was declined again. By 2017, however, analysts expect a slight decline in sales. The announcement by the US government to renegotiate the NAFTA agreement and to impose an import tax is causing disquiet in the Canadian automotive and supply industry. Read more (in German)

Dynamics in Canada’s wind industry weakening

Growth in the Canadian wind energy sector has slowed considerably in 2016. The addition of 700 MW was only half as large as in the previous five years. Especially in the recent growth markets of Ontario and Quebec, project pipelines are threatened to dry up.  The industry sets their hopes on Alberta, who wants to bring a new capacity of 5 GW to the grid by 2030. The first tranche over 400 MW is scheduled to be awarded later this year. Read more (in German)

June 20: Small and medium sized companies from Hesse, Germany, can now submit their success stories for the Hessian Export Awards 2017. Applications will be accepted until March 27.
