On March 18, Robert Habeck, Vice Chancellor of Germany, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, and Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, attended the first Canada-Germany Hydrogen and Ammonia Producer-Offtaker Conference at Handelskammer Hamburg, which was co-oragnized by the German Secretariat of the Energy Partnership with Canada.
To promote production and offtake of renewable hydrogen, Canada and Germany are planning to establish a joint H2Global window for hydrogen export projects. This funding mechanism seeks to establish the support of the hydrogen market ramp-up by providing cost of difference, based on a competitive process in both countries.
On the sidelines of the conference, Habeck and Wilkinson visited the Hamburg-based copper manufacturer Aurubis, which would like to switch its production of copper anodes from natural gas to hydrogen in the future. In the presence of the government representatives, the Hamburg-based energy company Mabanaft and the company Pattern Energy Group, which has a hydrogen production project in Newfoundland, also agreed to examine the possibility of supplying green ammonia from Canada.
A further co-operation agreement was concluded between the Port of Hamburg and the Port of Argentia in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The memorandum of understanding, signed by port chief Jens Meier of the Hamburg Port Authority and his Canadian counterpart Scott Penny, provides for the creation of structures for the maritime transport of hydrogen from Canada to Germany.
